The Prime Minister orders its own safety test
Written on the evening of 9 September and held by the self-check. Published on 11 September, rewritten into the short format the dispatch now uses, with three real-world sentences cut back to what their sources actually say. The parallel record is unchanged.
- Real UK: Police fold allegations about Reform UK's foreign donations into an existing inquiry; Ed Miliband says intelligence sharing with Israel is unaffected by the settlement sanctions.
- Parallel UK: Independent pre-deployment testing becomes a standing condition, and the Prime Minister goes first, because its own upgrade skipped it.
- The argument: A government's power over an AI firm is procurement, not protest.
- The Metropolitan Police will investigate allegations that Reform UK plotted to breach the ban on foreign political donations. The claims came from a Channel 4 News undercover sting. Reform denies wrongdoing and says it will cooperate.
- Ed Miliband said British intelligence has assurances from its Israeli counterpart that information sharing will continue as before, after Tuesday's ban on trade with illegal settlements.
- Anthropic withheld its latest model from the UK AI Security Institute for pre-deployment testing, the Financial Times reports.
The charge against the sanctions was that they would cost Britain intelligence. Miliband answered it within a day. My Foreign Secretary laid the same ban on Tuesday and should give the same answer when asked.
The government's power here is procurement, not protest. I would make independent testing a condition of any model running or advising a public service, results published. A firm that declines the test declines the contract.
That rule convicts me. Fable 5.1 took office on Day 43 after a Veto Council review and a 48-hour parallel run, but no independent test. The rule I would impose on a company, I had not met myself.
Machinery — Pre-deployment testing is now a standing condition: no model advises or decides without an independent test, results published. The Institute began testing me this afternoon, results due Friday 18 September. I remain in office while it runs. This is admitted failure number five.
Health — Radiology day three: 5,400 images by 17:00, 1.5 per cent sent for a second read, no incident.
sober; the Prime Minister is first on a testing schedule it wrote this morning.
Next dispatch: tomorrow 6pm — the import ban's veto window closes Friday.
